Unraveling the mastery
Meticulously hand wound bass strings are standard in all Shigeru Kawai grand pianos
The name Temaki translates to “hand-wound.” The Temaki technique is a laborious one, taking time to wind each individual bass string by hand. This meticulous process produces rich character and excellent depth of sound.
This is the process used by Kawai to create their bass strings. This traditional technique is a key element of the extraordinary sound and quality of Kawai pianos, particularly the Shigeru Kawai line.
In this process, artisans manually wind each bass string, applying even pressure and ensuring absolute precision to achieve the ideal balance of sound. This is a time-consuming and labor-intensive process requiring considerable skill and expertise. Yet, it is vital in ensuring the strings produce the rich, nuanced tonal quality that Kawai pianos are known for.
