ALL PREMIUM SPRUCE BEAM CONSTRUCTION

THE STRUCTURE OF TONE

Spruce, a naturally light yet strong material, is universally recognized for its outstanding acoustic properties. Capable of transmitting and storing sound energy exceptionally well, spruce has long been the preferred wood for soundboards in high-quality pianos. Yet, it is often overlooked for structural use due to its high cost and the meticulous craftsmanship required to mold it into a sturdy frame.

Going against the grain, Shigeru Kawai grand pianos make extensive use of this impressive wood in the construction of all our back frame beams. We source the highest quality spruce from regions known for their cold climates, which results in a slower growth rate for the trees and therefore denser, stronger wood. The wood is carefully selected and naturally air-dried to preserve its inherent acoustic qualities.

By utilizing spruce in our back frame beams, we ensure that each Shigeru Kawai grand piano benefits from superior energy transmission. This construction provides a unique tonal character and amplification, bringing forth an extraordinary, full-bodied resonance that is rich, clear, and dynamic.

UNCOMPROMISING QUALITY

But our usage of spruce does not end at superior sound transmission. Spruce’s lightness adds less weight to the overall structure of the piano, enabling better string vibration and subsequently, enhanced sound projection. Moreover, the stability of spruce ensures that our grand pianos maintain their tonal quality over time, resisting changes in humidity and temperature more effectively than other woods. All these characteristics culminate in an instrument that not only stands the test of time but also continues to inspire with its exceptional sound. It’s a testament to the meticulous design and dedication to craftsmanship embodied by Shigeru Kawai. Our master artisans pour countless hours into perfecting each grand piano, creating a musical masterpiece that is as visually stunning as it is acoustically superior. At Shigeru Kawai, our commitment to innovation and excellence in piano making doesn't stop at using spruce in our back frame beams. It’s part of a broader approach to piano construction, where every element is carefully considered, and each material chosen contributes to creating a piano that transcends expectations.
