Meet the Judges
Dr. Ivan Hurd
- Dr. Ivan Hurd is Assistant Professor of Piano Pedagogy at UT San Antonio, teaching pedagogy, piano literature, and applied lessons.
- He holds piano performance degrees from the University of Iowa (B.M.), Eastern Michigan (M.M.), and Oklahoma (D.M.A.).
- Ivan performed at the Classical Music Festival in Austria and presented at conferences like MTNA and NCKP.
- He has received teaching awards at the University of Oklahoma and served as co-chair for the 2016 MTNA Young Professionals Track.
- Outside of music, he enjoys traveling, cooking, and spending time with family.
Leslie Suarez
- Began piano lessons at 14, inspired by early love for the instrument.
- Studied under Dr. Carroll at Vidal M. Trevino School of Fine Arts.
- Graduated with a Bachelor’s in Music Performance from Texas A&M International in 2020.
- Pursuing a Master’s in Piano Performance at UT San Antonio with Dr. Hurd.
- Piano instructor at San Antonio Music Academy, awarded Instructor of the Year 2023.
Dr. Mark Camann
- Ph.D. in Musicology, M.A. in Central Eurasian Studies, B.A. in French.
- Instructor at Northwest Vista College since 2004; taught at San Antonio College and UT Austin.
- Published in the International Journal of Musicology on Bartók's Hungarian folk music.
- Authored M.A. thesis on Hungarian music and Ph.D. dissertation on David Guion.
- Focuses on Hungarian folk music and early 20th-century musicology.
