Guitar Wars is the annual search for San Antonio’s Best
Guitarists.
Guitar Wars began as an idea at Alamo Music Center to recognize San
Antonio’s Best Guitarists. It’s hard to believe that18 years have passed
since the first Guitar Wars in 1988. Guitar Wars, as a competition, has
become a San Antonio tradition, especially among guitar players who want to
show their stuff. Contestants submit an audition tape and the top players
are chosen to perform live. Guitarists are judged on stage presence, degree
of difficulty, originality and intonation. Each winner receives musical
equipment and cash.
Guitarists compete in four different areas – original composition,
stage presence, technique and audience appeal. Prizes are awarded in 3
categories: Electric, Acoustic and Bass. The top guitarists from preliminary
judging compete live at The Venue. There has been a variety of competitors
ranging from a 16 year old heavy metal player to several talented ladies
performing the music genres of rock, country, classical and blue grass
playing electric, acoustic and bass guitars.
Over the years San Antonio’s star performers have won this intense
competition. Chris Biasiolli with the “Vibe Raiders”, Manny
Santos with “Rag Doll” and Pat Kennison with “Union Underground”
have won the contest in previous years.
